Strawberry Flax Smoothie Time: An extremely hearty smoothie—great for a quick breakfast or on the go.
For those of you that haven’t yet gotten into juicing, this strawberry flax smoothie will make a perfect segway! Made mostly of ingredients we already have in our refrigerators and pantries, it makes for a simple, repeat recipe. While visiting a group of my girlfriends, I felt they would make the perfect guinea pigs to try this new concoction (especially after a weekend of unhealthy eating.) I felt good about servin’up a healthy dose of fiber, protein, omega-3s, as well as essential vitamins and minerals. And who doesn’t like strawberries? I didn’t need any ice for it either which also simplified the recipe and the mess! Just remember, it will be more of a room-temperature smoothie, which aides in digestion.
Strawberry Flax Smoothie Recipe
1.) 1 Cup Almond Milk (or non-fat milk)
2.) 1 Cup Strawberries
3.) 1/2 Cup Greek Yogurt
4.) 1 Tbsp. Flax Seed (or flax meal)
5.) 1 Tbsp. Honey (save for after you blend)
-Combine ingredients 1-4 in a blender until smooth. Stir in honey and enjoy!
My personal favorite ingredient in the strawberry flax smoothie is flax seed! It is so good for you with many nutritional benefits. The omega-3s give your brain a boost, and is also associated with lowering the risk of such maladies as heart disease, cancer, and depression. To further aide in digestion and absorption of all the nutrients of the flax seeds, I substituted the whole seeds with flax seed meal because your body tends to pass the whole flax seeds right through without absorbing the nutrients.
Additionally, I have a bit of a sweet tooth. If this strawberry flax smoothie isn’t sweet enough for you, you can do like I did and add one Truvia© packet (or something of the like) that will really add that extra sweet taste without adding the calories. I added one packet to the whole recipe, which made about 2 small (~8 oz) glasses worth. Also, my friend had almond milk in her fridge but non-fat milk would work well too!
Funny thing to note—the flax seed meal combined with the strawberry had a flavor reminiscent of a strawberry Nutrigrain© bar—totally a fan. Enjoy and tell us what you think!
